About: A travelogue to Wellington, New Zealand's country’s tiny and underrated capital deserves a longer stay than a typical two-night stopover. On a recent six-day trip in Welly (as locals affectionately call it), I spent most of my time checking out its buzzy dining scene that is fuelled by copious amounts of caffeine, craft beers and a melting pot of cuisines.

According to Restaurant Association of New Zealand, Wellington has more than 1,900 cafes, restaurants and bars in 2018. Wellington, which has a population of half a million, boasts a higher number of eateries per capita than New York City, according to the New York Times.

Wellington has a tight and compact city centre, where most of the eateries and drinking holes congregate around Lambton Quay and lifestyle enclaves Cuba Street and Hannahs Laneway, and nightlife district Courtney Place.

With eateries, shops, theatres and galleries within a 10-minute walking radius, I ditched the bus and walked and explored the labyrinth of laneways and streets.

The Straits Times: Hong Kong Travelogue - From hiking trails to geological marvels

The Straits Times, 14 Jan 2018

About: Hong Kong is one of the world’s most densely populated cities, which is known more as a shopping and dining haven than a nature hotspot. However, if one looks beyond the glitzy skyscrapers, there is an extensive network of hiking trails, country parks and even geological marvels to unravel.

In recent years, hiking is gaining popularity in Hong Kong, as more locals and tourists seek solace from the maddening crowd in the city centre.

This travelogue delves into the “wild” side of the territory that seem inconspicuous next to rapid urbanisation. Attractions include a sea of hexagonal columns in Sai Kung that was formed from a massive volcanic eruption 140 million years ago; hiking on the MacLehose trail that is blessed with views of idyllic coves and uplands; climbing hills and checking out waterfalls. Nature lovers can also sojourn to Cheung Chau Island to go glamping and star-gaze in geodesic domes and tepees.
